Day 311, 2012 It took me eight long years to get this portrait. It isn’t that I haven’t tried, like a million times over. Joey really didn’t want very much to do with the camera and to add lighting in, that was asking way to much.
Joey joined our pack in March 2005. In the greyhound world they referred to him as a spook. He was afraid of everything including his own shadow. We worked really hard for a long time to gain his trust. Some things don’t happen overnight and his trust was one of them. I still remember the day he nudged Karen in the butt before fleeing to the other side of the acre.
We let him have his space. We believed that on his terms, we would become his family.
And we did. Joey had been with us for four years before he finally came up and nudged our hands to scratch his ears. It was wonderful and we feared that it was a fluke. From that day forward, little by little, Joey continued to come up to us… always on his own terms.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to get a beautiful portrait of a beautiful boy. I have tons of blur and butt images to prove it. Believe me, he didn’t just waltz in and pose for this one either.
It was so worth the wait.
